Looking to build new cages and need input on materials!

benblue Nov 25, 2004 08:59 PM

I’m looking to build some new cages for my ackie’s and kimberley’s. I need information on some materials. Would melamine work as a building material for these cages? I’ve been told that condensation will get to the particle board and make the cage fall apart. This sounds possible, has anyone had this problem? The other material would be plywood. If I use plywood what is the best way to make the plywood waterproof? I was also thinking of maybe using plastic like my boa cages are made of. Has anyone used plastic for there monitor cages? I wonder if plastic would support the pressure and weight of dirt with water mixed in.

If everyone could give me your ideas on the best building material to use for my new cages that would be a big help to me and others on this forum.

Thanks,
Greg

ok, heres what i have found, plywood is awesome very sturdy and somewhat water resistant on its own, i use FRP board, which is thin plastic sheeting in 4 x 8 sheets at home depot and lowes for about 25 bucks a sheet. Another good option for water proofing is tile board, they have it at the same home improvement stores but for much less than frp, at about 10 bucks for a 4 x 8 sheets. its holding up against large black and white throat monitors in my collections, and i just caulk all the seems up real good. I didnt line the entire cage with my albigs just the floor and the first 10" up the walls.
good luck
