What types of ficus and other tree-like plants are good for cages?

mellowyellow Jul 01, 2003 01:31 PM

I'm looking for a small tree-like plant that will survive in a chameleon cage. What types of ficus stay small, around 4 ft? Could larger types be kept small by pruning? Can all ficus be trimmed into a tree form? What other tree-like plants are there? Another question, will crickets chew through aluminum screening? All and any help would be appreciated, thank you.

i like ficus bushes the best becuase if a main stem grows too big you can cut it in half and stick the top half back into the soil and it will grow roots and slowly begian to grow like the rest of the bush.

hagin a potho near the top makes nice long vins the can over-grow the cage if given the right light and temps.

i would stick to ficus and pothos just becuase they are the easiest to take care of in a cage....all you do is give them water....there are some more people will suggest, i didn't include them becuase i forgot there names and i dont use them

Ficus trees, gotta love them! If you get a Ficus retusa, or even a Ficus benjamina variety with small leaves, you can apply some tried and true bonsai techniques and end up with a very nice little tree! I use ficus bonsai extensively in my enclosures (see www.bonsaivictor.com) with great results.
Check out the link I provided. It gives some great details on how to create your very own Ficus bonsai in a very short time!
If you have any questions, let me know.
