I think my Gecko is blind - help!

Sarah_A Nov 26, 2004 01:01 PM

Hi, thanks for looking at my thread, hope you can help!

About 2 months ago I bought a healthy little jungle leopard gecko which I called Yossarian, and I keep he(or she?) in a relatively large vivarium, which I spray with a humidifier each morning and keep at 84 degrees by day, 74 by night. I feed Yoss on little black crickets, generally between 8 and 12 per feed, and skip a feed every 3 days. I handle Yossarian gently most days, I have never grabbed or dropped the wee thing and although initially he was quite jumpy, the lizard is now fairly tame and laid back.

The week before last Yossarian somehow managed to escape (I must have left the viv open a crack) and was gone for 4 days. When we found him, he seemed fine, a little more nervous perhaps but no worse for wear… however since then he became a bit more withdrawn and sedated. At first I thought it must just be the shock of escaping and maybe he needed to acclimatise again, but on closer inspection I realised Yossarian wasn’t responding to any visual stimulation, only sound.

You can wave your hand in front of Yoss now and get no response – he can still hunt and feed just fine, but goes to sleep anywhere in the vivarium (he used to just sleep under the hides) and it’s really sad to see him stumbling about with an air of confusion. I would like to know if anyone has an idea what might have caused the poor little thing to lose it’s vision and if there is anything I can do?

The viv

A little closer and you can see the size of the gecko in relatio to the viv

Poor little Yoss - it doesn't show in these photos but there does not appear to be anything wrong with his eyes

Obviously you would know your leos behavior better than anyone else, but are you 100% sure it's blind? It seems to me that a leo would be almost unable to hunt without being able to see. Even if it does hear perfectly, I can't image a cricket walking by makes much sound.

It's quite possible that he/she is just used to you and your hand. Again, you'd know better, but I know some of my leos run when I even look at them weird, while others I could wave my hands all around and they'd just act like I wasn't there.

Oh yeah, I'm pretty sure it can't see because it doesn't register any visual sitimuli at all - you can make like you're gonna reach for it's head and it doesn't flinch or try to move out the way. It also bumps into things and seems to feel for where it's going. Before it used to follow every little movement with it's eyes (I was very conscious of this, I found it fascinating) - the most obvious thing is that before when I fed it, you could watch it watching the bug - Yossarian would freeze, but his eyes would follow it. Now he just freezes with a blank stare, not essentially in the direction of prey; I'm not sure how he hunts, if it's by smell or sound or what? Snakes hunt by smell don't they?

I'm no expert... this is all very perplexing...

Oh yeah, sorry I forgot to say - thank you for trying to help!

Get a pair of those plastic feeding tongs and grab a cricket with them. Normally the cricket will be moving around like crazy trying to get away. Hold it up to the gecko's face and see is he responds.

Way ahead of you there Andrew. I had a cricket crawing about on the end of a pencil right in front of him - he didn't follow it with his eyes and just ignored it for a while (never would have happened before) so I moved it closer and he seemed to smell it eventually and munched it pretty quick after that. Like I said, He still seems to be able to feed, just follows nothing with his eyes?

You got me stumped. Who known what could have caused that. I would say it's kind of wierd, but if he's eating then it should be all good. You might wanna try a vet to see if it's like an eye infection or bacterial infection or something wierd that you can't see just by looking at the eyes... short of that.. .I have no idea...

He seems to be perking up a bit, yesterday & today he was responding to things in front of his face! Also stopped bumping into things and crawling under the hides... lord knows what all that was about then, but it's so great to have cheeky Yoss back again! Thanks for your help!

Hmm, one thought came to my mind when reading this thread as a possibility. Is there anything in your home the little guy could have been exposed to while it was MIA. I'm thinking of things like mouse/rat poisen, any kind of insect spraying or possibly cleaning fluids, etc.. I would think if it walked around on a floor or something recenty cleaned with like pine-sol' or just got to a area where those kinds of things may be could cause harm. In Arizona we had the inside of our house bug sprayed once a month and I dreaded any of my geckos escaping. Just a thought anyways.
