Shedding and crusty nostril.

mizar 21 May 15, 2003 02:31 PM

Is it possible that there is a link to the white crusty nostril that our collared get sometimes and the shedding ? My collared had white nostril for the past two week...then shed monday and since then no more whitish crust. Just an observation i made...

The only "coincidence" I have suspected of being tied to the heavy salt blooms from the nostrils is related to the amount of food the lizards eat. My young adults are sort of "binge" eaters, and it LOOKS like they blow more salt after they have gone overboard on the groceries, particularly if they were dusted crickets. That is my impression anyway. I keep meaning to get the "salt" analyzed to see just what exactly is also being excreted, such as excess potassium salts, etc. I'm sure someone has already done this, but if so, I can't locate it. Hint Hint LOL.

....since this is *reported* to be the best balanced feeder insect for a long term ration. Mine get easily "spoiled" if I offer too many mealworms to certain ones, they seem to prefer them to all other foods and will then refuse to even LOOK at a cricket. I feel the mealworms are too high in chiton due to their hard "skins" (compared to their body mass) and there are *reports* of possible impactions due to this indigestable material overloading the intestinal tract in young lizards. However, My Wife feeds her leos of all ages almost exclusively on mealworms, a bowl full at a time, without any problems (to date) LOL.

Ok, my collared eat almost only mealies, but i plan to switch him back to crix this june while i'm on vacation . Since i will be home for three weeks, i will be able to monitor the change closely.
