PLEASE HELP!! Sick Chameleosn

Lynnabugg Nov 26, 2004 05:02 PM

PLease anyone with some knowledge about veiled chameleons. One was given to us and we recently noticed he is looking sick. Today he has taken a turn for the worse. It seems almost like he is having heart attacks or seizures and now he keeps falling over with small amounts of blood coming out of his mouth... PLEASE any suggestions... OUr vet is already closed for the day.

Well my first response was to take him to the vet asap but since it is closed already that doesn't appear to be an option. You said that you just got him? Do you know what kind of conditions he was kept under before??

The seizures sound like MBD but I am not sure about the blood in the mouth, may have bit his tongue. If you can I would go to the petstore and get exoterras electrodize supplement and give it to him via syringe (read the instructions). I had a beardie(rescue) with MBD who was having seizures and they cleared right up...still take him to the vet as soon as you can this does not sound good.

I am sorry. This sounds as though it needs emergency attention. Even though your vet is closed, he/she should be on-call, or have an available vet on-call. This is part of a doctors job-to be available when needed. Try clling in a page. We could suggest a lot of home remedies, I'm sure, but it sounds as though he needs some serious help fast.
Best-Of-Luck Vibes going out to you!!
Let us know the outcome, please.

some of the symptoms you mentioned sounded a lot like metabolic bone disease until you mentioned oral hemorraging. That makes it sound like a severe parasite, bacterial or viral infection. I have never heard of a nutritional diseases like MBD known to cause bleeding. If it is a parasitic or bacterial infection you may be able to stop it in its tracks with immediate veterinary care. If the cause is viral then it may be best for you to consider euthenasia. No matter what, you need to seek professional help immediatley! If you have other animals in your collection, it may be a wise idea to have a necropsy done (assuming the animal doesnt make it). I have had ill chameleons before and unfortunatly, each outcome was tragic and not in the favor of the reptile! Chameleons in specific are subject to severe stress and often times recovery is slim once symptoms have progressed that far. I'm sorry I couldnt offer more help. Best of luck to you though!
