My Nicaraguan Boa is turning BLUE!?!?!?!?

carl3 Nov 26, 2004 06:41 PM

Ok...I thought I was seeing things at first....I have shown two other non-herp people this snake to verify that I'm not simply going crazy. I have an 04 Nicaraguan boa that I bought as a FH baby from B. Seigal in the spring from one of his earliest shipments and its turning BLUE. I haven't really paid much attention to this snake's coloration before given I'm a new teacher with little time on my hands PLUS I have about 70 plus snakes so I haven't been able to spend much time lately with my collection other than cleaning/feeding once per week.

I thought the boa always had a greyish-blue hue but after a recent shed, the bottom portion of its ground color has turned a definite blue. I'm not talking a silvery blue that, lets say, anery motley cornsnakes get...I'm talking green tree python blue. Is this permanent?, considering the snake is still young OR could it be some environmental condition stimulating odd color change (like maybe in hog island boas)?

I'll try to get some decent pics sometime this weekend but I'm not even sure if they'll come up accurately, given I only have a cheap digi camera. I would love an opinion on this OR if anyone has pics of this type of color change in other nicaraguan boas. Is this common? Anyone else hear of this or experience this before?

Bill,
I live near Philadelphia area. I truly wish someone else could see this boa. Its really quite amazing. I guess its not a big deal since no one else replied to my post. Either that or no one else takes me seriously. If you live in the area, I would love to get together and show you this snake. I have zero herp friends and my wife is tolerant at best of my hobby. I showed my wife and she could care less but she confirmed the snake's color to be a very nice bluish coloration. Well, I plan on feeding later so I'll try and get some good pics then.

Thank you again for your reply.

Hey Jason,
Ditto on the wife thing on this end. She likes them, but not that interested. I wish you were closer, I'm down in Fla., so seeing old blue personally is out, but you should try to get a pic up.
I just purchased a Nic., I think this is a pic of her what do you think ?
Also what temps do you keep your Nics at. My tank is ranging 93 to 79 is that too hot or cold?
Thanks for the info
Bill

Jason, Some young Nicaraguan boas will develop a blue color to them. It is difficult to photograph. As one of my blue females grew older she developed a nice orange color. I have attached a picture of her. I hope this helps. Chris Ginkel

Chris...thank you for the reply...man, this boa forum really moves fast. This is already halfway down the 2nd page now.lol. I posted a pic of the bluish coloration I'm talking about...its on the first page under kenneth's post. THanks for the info...greatly appreciated....do you know if these guys keep the blue or do they lose it?
