The Leno mesh is probably what you want. It is a firm nylon mesh with large enough holes for lizard toes to get a grip on, and large enough holes to let light through. You would probably just cut the desired shape and either turn it over in a very narrow hem and machine stitch, or overcast it.
These two online outdoors fabric stores are staffed by VERY helpful people, who sure were nice when I had a hiking clothes fabric question.
