Breeder Rabbits in DC area? Hungry Burmese...

riker Jul 01, 2003 02:14 PM

I recently moved to Hyattsville MD, just outside DC, and I'm wondering if anyone knows where I can findcheap rabbits around here? Bishop, my Burmese, is starving, and the pet store down the street wants to charge me $30 for a scrawny rabbit that I wouldn't pay $15 for. Help me! Thank you!

There is a rabbitry in Clifton, VA off of Pope's Head Road. I dont know the name of it but I know its there. Why not just buy them online?

I will try that again, now that you mention it, but in the past she hasn't accepted dead stuff. Likes the live ones, she does. I'll find a cheap online place and giver her another shot. Thing is, with shipping and all it would probably come out to about the same money as buying the $30 scrawny thing down the street, although I haven't looked lately.

I highly recommend you switch her to pre-killed by stunning or witholding food until she is convinced to take pre-killed or thawed. A live rabbit can seriously harm a snake with its back claws and when they freak- as they should when struck by a python- the back claws can wreak havoc in the wink of an eye.
To answer your question try the snakefeeders yahoo group. You can post for free and though the group is basically quiet- the membership of rabbit breeders resides throughout the U.S.

You can get four or five 7lb. online for the cost of two at the pet store.

I usually buy mine from RodentPro.com. They have up to 9 lbs I think. I believe Tango from this forum sells larger rabbits as well? You can also go to the "Breeders/Dealers/Stores" link above and look there too.

I suggest you search for live poultry stores or markets. They usually also carry live rabbits. Look in the yellow pages or check out immigrant neighborhoods. Ethnic grocery store workers can often give you tips on sources.
