Pic of leo and question about carrot tails

AlteredMind99 Nov 26, 2004 09:49 PM

Hey,

I was just wondering about the genetics of carrots tails. Do you get a carrot tail line by selecting leo's with orange on their tails and breeding them and then continuing to do that until you have a line of straight carrot tails? Or is it done differently than that?

Also, one more question, when you have a leo that has reduced black spotting, is that called Hypo?

Is the picture of this Leo a Hypo?

Sorry, i get confused with all the termonology. Lol

TIA for your help!!

True carrot tails come from the Hines line of hypos. There will be no spots within the orange on the tail. To get a greater percentage of carrot one would selectively breed geckos with greater and greater amounts of carrot.

Today things are getting somewhat confused as some breeders market any gecko with orange on the tail as a carrot tail. For example, although your leo has a lot of orange on its tail, it is not a true carrot tail.

I think that the general rule of thumb for hypos is that in order to qualify as a hypo it has to have less than 10 body spots.

Hope this helps a bit!

For basic morph terminology, see:
http://www.freewebs.com/stinauiuc/morphdescriptions.htm

I would not call that a hypo, because by definition a hypo is less than 10 spots on the main body of the gecko.

And Carrot-tail is linebred, so yes the only way to get it is to keep breeding carrot-tails to carrot-tails until it eventually fills out.

one more question. Does the ten body spots include spots on the head?

No. I usually go from the neck to the base of the tail, no spots on the head would classify it as a baldy, while reduced spots on the head are not really any specific morph.
