When to look for snakes???

msubigdawg Nov 27, 2004 12:06 AM

I live in South Alabama. I would love to go looking for snakes sometime. I know it is a bit cold now but I have some questions. When is a good time to go looking for any type of snake in the south. Also where is a good place to be looking. I would love to find anything, rattlers, copperheads, kings, garters or anything. I would love any help.

I had a post a little while back called "road cruising, night or day?", that has a lot of useful information you may like to check out, it is probably still on this page, maybe the second. I would suggest not trying too hard this time of year, I dont know what your weather is like there but best results wont be until spring. I would suggest trying around March or April for best results. Until then, keep your eyes out for artificial cover(roofing tin, boards, etc.)because those places can be very promising in the spring. If you want to hunt I would suggest from looking in the morning hours before the peak temperatures. The hours from 12-4 are usually pretty slow for me. Artificial cover, imo, has a greater tendency to attract snakes than their natural habitats. Good luck, and as far as road cruising goes, read the post mentioned above. One last note, watch where you are puttin your hands before flipping anything. Good luck-Cole

msubigdawg:
Cole had some good advice. I have only searched for reptiles on the west coast so am not familiar with the species and their biological preferences in your region. However, if input from others is any indications, reptiles can be found any month of the year depending on weather / temperature conditions. I would expect that in your region, any time temperatures are at or above about 60 degrees F. with some sunshine for a period of 2, 3 or more days, you could have success in finding some species.

Here in northwestern Oregon, some species can be found in all months of the year as long as temperature conditions are generally at or above 55 degrees for a few days. It is also very helpful to have some sunshine.

With only a high of about 51 today with brief periods of sunshine, I observed two species, a juvenile Sharp-tailed Snake and juvenile S. Alligator Lizard.
