Possible hets proving out! (albino in egg pic)

RandyRemington Jul 01, 2003 02:29 PM

With all the skepticism on the wisdom of purchasing possible hets I thought I would post a pic of an albino in an egg I slit today on day 59 of incubation. Actually I appear to have two albinos in the two surviving eggs from a small clutch (three went bad pretty early on).

Perhaps we can start a list somewhere of sellers who's possible hets proved out? Of course with possible hets one would expect a lot of them not to prove out without any deceptive selling practices involved. However, when the odds work out it confirms that the seller wasn't just marking normals as possible hets as some buyers speculate that some sellers might do.

I produced my 50% possible het albino mother of this clutch using a NERD 100% het male. The father of this clutch was a 66% chance het albino produced by Paul Newstead and sold by Joe Dembinski. The father also has a 50% chance of being het for Jolliff axanthic but it will take years for me to get back to you on if that possible het gene also worked out for me.

Thanks.

I try not to step on toes but I think I still manage it from time to time.

I was trying hard not to cut them but they went 2 days longer than others in this incubator and the one was looking funny (window opening on the side) so I panicked. Hopefully no ill will come of it. If I hadn't opened them and later found them dead I would have always thought I should have. Hate to 2nd guess.

A big thanks to Kevin of NERD and Paul Newstead for breeding the albino gene carrying ancestors of my babies and Joe Dembinski for selling one of them to me. These babies weren’t any harder to produce than any normal I've produced but the work of others before me allowed me to have the genes to reach my goal. Even if you aren't crazy about morphs it's nice that the work of so many have made them available to the general public and has GREATLY increased the interest in the species in general.

I'm glad to see some of those possible hets proved out. Are those the two eggs you were telling me were a long-shot?

I'm really happy for you,

Yep, those are the eggs. Actually I have two more from mom's sister for next week (wish I had more good eggs left but oh well). The odds of my producing even one albino out of these two was only about 15% given that both parents where possible hets. I think the odds of having produced two was something like 2% including the odds of the parents both being het.

These are the first albino ball pythons I’ve even seen in person. Maybe I’ll bring one to the September show. I’m actually a little worried about one of them as it looks a little funny in the egg but hopefully it’s ok.

Randy, congrats man! That is cool. I think possibles are a decent bet if you have a morph male or 100% het male. I just bought the Bell line hypo from the classifieds, and he is coming with 3 possible het females....I am hoping for your luck, bottle it and send me some!

I actually sold the 100% het albino father of the 50% chance het mother of this clutch to buy the 66% possible het albino father of this clutch. I was willing to replace a 100% male with a 66% because the new one was also 50% possible het Jolliff axanthic. I'm sure glad that it worked out that he was a het albino. I could have spent years trying to prove him with possible het girls. It may not have been the smart thing to do but it's turned out good so far.

Not just one, but two huh? Thats great news, I'm happy for you. So, did you break down and buy a digital camera finally?

Thanks!

I got a Target charge card and used it for the Olympus Camedia C-4000 Zoom. Anyone with this camera have any advice? I haven't taken the time to try to figure it out yet.

I've got an Olympus Camedia C-3000 They're pretty straight forward, but by a good set of rechargeable batteries.

Congrats Randy!

This is along the lines of a message I posted earlier - no replies I am more curious at the odds, but this would prove interesting.

I have about 26 days to go for my eggs. No albinos, but all hets!

Congratulations! I hope some of your "possible het luck" was transferred to me last week at the show! Can't wait to see if I have a het piebald! Good job on some hard work! I'll be getting with you again next year! That gives me a year to work on getting my limit upped by the powers that be (my wife!)
Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy....keep the pics coming!

Good luck Randy!

My wife has been saying for years that I'll never hatch out a morph so it was pretty sweet to see those albinos. She HATES snakes and has been very unsupportive of the whole thing but yesterday she was making suggestions on how best to care for these (i.e. not looking at them too much). Maybe both of our wives will eventually be a little more tolerant if we start hatching out some pieds next!
