Woma has start of RI. Question ??

Waswell Jul 01, 2003 03:05 PM

Woma has started to develop RI. Not severe yet. Purchased him 2 weeks ago and he has eaten 2 F/T every 2 days. His last meal was on 6/23. He started into shed and thus refused a meal. Should shed this week. That is the history of the Woma. I noticed 5 days ago he started to rub his nose although I see NO DISCHARGE. He has also started to wheeze a bit, not much. NO Mouth gapping. Here is my question----I am taking him to the Vet on Wednesday am for a checkup/diagnosis. CAN I PURCHASED THE ANTIBIOTICS or must they come thru the Vet? I use a hot rock on one side and raised the ambient temp to 88 degrees. Any advise???? Thanks

With an animal as expensive and hard to obtain as a Woma, I don't think I'd take any chances. You may be able to get the drugs at a co-op, but then you have to do the diluting and dosing yourself. Some of these drugs are dangerous.

The RI might not be simple bacterial RI..it could be some parasite like Rhabdiform lungworms or Lung Flukes. I think I'd let the vet do his thing and just go ahead and buy the drugs he prescribes from him.

Thanks for the info. I will take your advise and let the Vet do it all. Are my temps OK? Not much lit on Woma Care. Thanks again !!!

I'd lose the hot-rock, if I were you. They have been known to cause thermal burns in reptiles.

I'd set him up with a warm end of the cage and a cool end (thermal gradient) so he can move back and forth as he pleases to thermoregulate. Maybe 88 to 90 at the warm end and 78 to 80 at the cool end. You can allow a few degrees of night drop.

Vet said no RI found. GREAT NEWS. Snake shed last night and ate 2 F/T Fuzzies this am. Wheezing has stopped. Could a snake in shed cause the wheezing? Never had a snake in all my years wheeze due to the shed process. Very Strange. At least I now have peace of mind. I guess that was worth the $45.00 Vet Bill

Could the wheezing have been that little wheezie hiss thing that some pythons do when you are ticking them off? My Chondropythons do that sometimes. It sounds like they are wheezing, but it's just their way of hissing to tell you to leave them alone. I've never worked with Womas before so I don't know if they do that or not....

This was a wheezing related to breathing. He does hiss because he's upset. Usually raises his head too. NEVER has attempted to bite. VERY Docile animals. Like holding a wet noodle. Really do not coil when held like BCC's do. Thanks for all the help !!!! It is much appreciated

OK, one more question, then I'll leave you alone. What kind of substrate are you keeping him on?
