No Brumination

adshawksfan Nov 27, 2004 06:28 PM

My adult beardie who is about a year and half old has shown no signs of brumanation he is as active as ever I have heard some people say that they reduce the amount of time the light is on for there adults in the winter to stimulate brumanation and some say they wait until the beardie acts like they want to brumanate and then cut back the light. What do you guys think does he really need to brumanate or should I just let him make the call.

Hi
i think beardies decide for ther own.
i would not push them to brumate.
if the days get shorter and les daylight come in youre house they go on ther own.
then you can lower the licht houre little bit .
also then if you see that let him bath so he poop and so poop can not rot in tummy.
also make a nice cave to sleep in .

Yeah, my beardie is just starting to brumate. I don't mess with his lights or anything, but naturally the house is getting a little cooler, and the days are much shorter, so he knows. My mali uromastyx however (and adopted uro that was neglected...I call her a "special needs" lizard because she has some strange habits) is showing no signs of slowing. She's eating as much as usual, basking as much as usual (which really is only a few hours a day anyways), and just as fat as usual.

This year I have to remember to try to get my beardie to poop before he goes all of the way down in brumation. Last year he didn't, so about a month or so later...well...it wasn't pretty..it wasn't pretty at all.

Brumation is sort of the depressing part of the year, and for me, still sort of the scary part (it's harder to tell how bad or good the lizard is doing), but you have to let nature take its course.

I love the brumation time. It gives me a much needed rest in the off season. Once they are all back up, it's going to be a madhouse all over again. Then, here come the eggs & babies.
It also gives me time to make all the necessary plans for the breeding season.
