I'm Raising Bullfrogs and Need Some Advice

turtlesong Nov 28, 2004 01:45 AM

Hello. I've got two adolescent bullfrogs I'm trying to raise. But I've had to move around, and have them in a big, plastic container. I keep them by the window but there's not much light.

My question is, is natural sunlight important to bullfrogs? I've got a little reading lamp for them now, and if this isn't sufficient, what kind of bulbs/lights do I need?

The temps where I'm living are mild. It's in the 60's/70's during the day. Another question I have is if frogs need to bask. I do have a log in there and some rocks, a bubbler and a filter, and now, a little heater. I just need some advice on how to raise these frogs properly.

I have raised several bullfrogs. They dont require heat to digest their food like snakes do and they dont require uv light. The main thing you need to do is keep them well fed and keep the water fresh. Amphibians are sensitive to chemicals, so you might use spring water. Or if you cant...let the water sit for 24 hours before you put the frogs in it. I hope this helps. Bullfrogs are my favorite frogs and make really interesting pets. I have a medium sized male right now. TJ

I know what you mean. Feeding BF's are a chore. I feed them everyday. Is this okay?

Appreciate the advice. It's good to know they don't require all the extra care and that MBD isn't a big problem. These frogs, although I don't know if many know, are neat pets, and quite clever too.

How much, or how many times, do you feed your frogs? I feed mine crickets everyday. Next I'll introduce some mice. I just wonder if you should skip a day or two now and then, so that they don't get too fat.

I'll check out that forum.

Yeah, its ok to feed them daily. How much you feed them is another story. I think that bullfrogs are some of the coolest herps I've kept. Before I got into amphibians, I didnt realize what serious predators they were. I kinda like to bulk mine up a bit though. They are pretty impressive when theyre big like that.
