Why such the large price discrepancy between the two?
Veiled chameleons are usually always captive bred & are available in huge quantities. Panther chameleons can often be purchase CB or WC. Also, it took me longer to hatch my panther eggs than my veileds(more work & more monitoring). The panther chameleons are also available in such an awesome variety of colors & patterns.(hence the higher cost.
A chameleon that stays autumn forest colors(veileds) could not be sold for $200 each. While someone getting one that had brilliant reds, blues, purples would gladly pay the money for it.
If you go to the photo gallery, you can see the big difference in appearance between the two species. You get what you pay for.

It may have a little to do with the pathers being more sought after because of their beautiful colors, but the main reason they cost so much more is because they are much rarer when compared with vieleds. veileds have be bred in captivity for many generations in the US and the abundance of them secures the low price. you can also see this in jacksons chameleons they are a little bit more expensive now due to the fact that hawaii has band exporting them.
Simple laws of supply and demand. There is simply too large a supply of veild chameleons for it to secure a high price. the previous poster is also correct in that the fact veilds were established in captivity longer before panthers came around, therefor the large numbers. And alse its novelty value decreases, Sort of how a PS2 would cost a lot more than a PS1.
It cannot just be said that the colors alone warrents the higher prices for panthers. Parsons chameleons dramaticaaly pale in comparison to a panther and veild in terms of color(altough it is stunning in its own right), but cost 10 times more than a panther and 20 times more than a veiled. again, becuase of supply and demand.
What sucks is that people give less care and attention to something that costs less, and you will constantly get inbred veilds in the industry. People often think that a 25 buck chameleon is replacable and does not diserve to be spend money on vet visits. Sad. okay okay..i'll stop ranting.
Thank you all!
