Veiled Chameleon! Please Read!

Chamcham505 Nov 28, 2004 02:38 PM

Hello,
I recently purchased an adult male veiled chameleon from high quality site and received him about a week ago. He is a beautiful teel adult male, and he is quite large, about 18 in.
When I purchased him, the dealer I bought him from assured me that he is in perfect health condition, and is not very old. He looks fine to me, the thing that worries me is his casque! It seems smaller than usual, and is slanted to one side. It does not effect him in any way, becuase he is very healthy and active. I was just wondering if this is normal, or will negativly affect his health in the future? would appreciate your input! Thanks! -Michele-

This is very common with captive bred veiled chameleons.
They have been bred in captivity for quite a while;
some inbreeding and genetic drift has happened because
there isn't a good infusion of wild stock very often.
It can also be caused by developmental nutrition, lack of calcium and uv light. If he is strong without any other problems it's nothing to worry about, some casque variation is normal. I would definately research a reputable breeder in the future if you want nice flawless animals. They would have large beautiful adults as their breeding stock, & you would feel good about the animal you purchased.
Not to downplay the one you have, I have a few "weird"
chameleons right now, they've turned out to be my favorites!
