photo of the spot on my iguana

raisnok Nov 28, 2004 02:53 PM

here is a photo of the spot on my iguana, im not sure if the photo is clear enough to see it, but it has black around it, and the center is a yellowish kind of crusty look to it.
i want to take him to a vet and im in the process of finding the nearest vet in my state, since in my town there are no herp vets.

if you notice he looks to be thin, i just took him in about a month ago, and i am in the process of getting him some weight, i switched his diet to fresh collards and mustard greens along with shredded veggies pumpkin, green beans, sweet potatoe, dried figs, parsnips, acorn and butternut squash, hibiscus flowers, mango, papaya, and cantaluop, and grapes.

That's good that you mentioned he is thin because I was just about to post to you that your ig needs to put on weight. The food you are feeding him now sounds good. If you need more ideas about food go to the iguanaden diet.

before i took him a month ago, all he got was kale.... and i cant say for sure how often.
he lived in the basement because the family was terrified of him after he got up in size........they never went to visit him.
now along with these spots showing up on him he has a nasty atitude from not being handled and tries to bite. which im not used to because my 5 ft iguana likes to be held, and he likes to watch tv....LOL
but it has been a long road to get this iguana to eat what i feed, but he is coming along.
the sad thing i have seen is for people to use an animal like this iguana as a decoration in their home.... at first he was in the living room in a beautiful enclosure... but as he got older and more aggressive he got moved(the beauty wore out) so they bought a aquarium to replace his spot, ill never understand why people buy an animal for looks..... my home might not look nice{i live in a small mobile home} but my animals are well cared for. my master bed room was converted to a iggy room, right now i have it devided because i dont know if the spots are contagious. but max my biggest has his own tv...LOL... and a feather bed...... did i mention i sleep in a small room the size of a bath room...LOL... my iggy room also has a fridge in it, and a sink.... and well a rocking chair, when max was small i use to rock him in the evenings, i still do when i am at home i work evenings now.

Hi, One of things u can do is get some CRITICAL CARE FOR HERBIVORES BY OXBOW PET PRODUCTS. I get it from my vet. It will help him to put on some weight and give him alot of the good things that his body needs. I keep this aroung for my babies and give it to them on there food once in awhile.

I think a vet trip would be a good idea...
I would guess a viral or bacterial infectin of sorts.
OR could he be rubbing along the cage wire to get to the other IG or to display breeding behaviors maybe? This is breeding season afterall...

Good luck with your new addition and let us know what it is.

Was this spot on him when you rescued him or has this developed since you have had him? Your ig diet sounds GREAT!!! THis is just my opinion, but the spot on your ig doesn't look like a disease or anything, it looks like a thermal burn from a heat rock or some other heating element. Did his former owners have a heat rock or a basking light that the ig could get too close to? I really think this is a thermal burn, but it is difficult to tell from your photos, so it could be something else. Has the spot spread at all? jrbl

Yes, a trip to the vet is the better thing for you to do... It looks like fungus to me...
Take care and good luck,

he has a vets appointment tomorrow morning, all the way in raliegh nc, i live about an hour away, so i am preparing everything for the trip.

a month ago when the ig came here, he had a small black spot, i thought it was maybe abnormal patterning on him...after a week i noticed it to be becoming bigger..... the only vet we have here that will even see a herp, saw him, all i got out of that visit was, "well im not sure, im not to good with iguanas, but we did trim his nails, maybe you should try "local pet store" they have a guy there who is good with iguanas, he might know something"
so i made a trip there alone just to check things out, and i ended up calling the local health dept, there were puppies in a cage as you come in the door with a sign "please do not touch, these puppies have been exposed to parvo" i turned around, walked out, not wanting his advice.....
as i researched more on skin problems in iguanas it kind of seemed to me he had black spot..... but im no vet.....so i began looking for a herp vet......i found the one in raliegh, seems to be the closest.
