Visible differences between fertile and infertile eggs

georgio Jul 01, 2003 03:55 PM

I volunteer at my local animal shelter and we recently got a gravid iguana in. By the time I got to the shelter she had already laid 4 eggs. I put some potting soil in her enclosure so she could dig to stimulate laying. I was wondering if there were visible differences between fertile and infertile eggs. These eggs look great, they are full bodied and white. From my experience with bearded dragons I would assume they were fertile. Any thoughts?

Whether they are fertile or not, freeze them and throw them out...we dont need any more baby igs thats for sure....Just my opinion...Lyn

I definitely agree. There are too many iguanas out there in need of homes already. The reason I ask is the iguana seems well cared for and most likely will be claimed. I would not want an owner intending to hatch iguanas (even though I may not agree with it that's their perogative) to call up 2 days later about his lost iguana only to find all the eggs he wanted to incubate were frozen. If nobody calls in they are going directly to the freezer.

I'd toss them. If they wanted them incubated they would have reported a lost or missing iguana to the shelter and added that she is gravid and they want to incubate the eggs.
