Does the snake shed its skin all at once?

Michelle1010 Nov 28, 2004 05:48 PM

My 9 year old son bought a snow about a month ago. It started to shed a couple of nights ago but hasn't shed all of the skin. It shed in pieces. Is that normal? Also he doesn't go in his water bowl. What should we do, if anything? We fed him tonight so we will have to wait to hold him until tomorrow.

Normally your snake will shed in one piece. However, if you live in a dry climate as I do, it may shed in pieces. Let your snake travel through some warm moist paper towels either in its hide or maybe in the deli cup that it came in. I put the towels in warm water then wring them out so they are not dripping and put them in the hide with the snake. Does the trick every time. In the future you may also want to mist the tank every day to increase the humidity when the snake goes into its shed cycle.
If you haven't already, I would wait to feed until you can get its entire shed removed. Pay particular attention to the tip of the tail. Skin can build-up there and cause circulation problems. Left like this the tip of the tail could fall off.
Once you feed your snake, don't handle it for about two days to avoid regurgitation problems.
I hope this helps.

Thank you for the help. We are new at the reptile thing. My son loves them. He also has a Chinese firebelly newt that he bought last week. If he could have more snakes he would. Unfortunately we have already fed him. We haven't had any problems with the regurgitation when we pick him up 24 hrs after feeding. Thanks for letting us know when to pick him up. Should I mist him tonight in the aquarium? Also can I use tap water? I will keep an eye on his tail. Is the corn suppose to go in his water dish? I have never seen him drink.

you could mist your baby in his enclosure. after the 24-48 hour wait since he's been fed you could soak him a little to get the extra shed off. if it stays on could cause trouble. I have 5 snakes and this is what i do when they go into shedding...i'll mist down their tanks every other day or so when i see them go cloudy. then when they start to clear up i'll mist their tanks a couple more times. then i'll take my snake out and mist him/her while i'm holding it. mine have perfect sheds...always. i use bottled water for misting and drink water. you may not see your corn drink but they do drink. probably more at night when it's dark. i have never seen mine soak in their water bowls but i provide water 24/7.
another thing is if you have the screen lids is cover half with siran wrap to help keep heat and humidity in. just a suggestion.

Thank you to all that responded. I soaked him and peeled the rest of it off.
