Springtail infestation and Crested Geckos

geckohouse Nov 28, 2004 07:50 PM

Just set up a vivarium 2 weeks ago. Substrate, mulch and moss straight from the pet store for reptiles, added plants (washed thoroughly - or at least what I thought was thoroughly), cork tube, branches, etc and then two cresteds. Now I find that I have a pretty healthy population of springrails thriving on the buried branches. Are springtails a problem for cresteds? The reptile house that I got the cresteds from locally want me to dump the vivarium planting layer, mulch and moss and start over, is that the only way to go? Will I not be reintroducing these little springtails if I add another plant(s) to the vivarium? As it turns out from what I have read on the net about these springtails, cresteds' habitat provides the perfect conditions for insects.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Springtails are found on most/all houseplants. They are completly harmless to reptiles just a little unsightly.
