Anybody ever wonder how much they've spent on animals and supplies.........

SNAKE26 Nov 29, 2004 03:34 AM

I've been fooling around with reptiles (not just snakes) for about 20 years or so now. I probably don't want to know how much money has come out of my pocket for a new animal or some kind of supplies. But, on the flip side, the experience, knowledge, and dealing with super cool herp people is priceless!!

Trying to convince the wife that the 5g snake will make us some money to cover the cost of the animal and a lil extra.... On the flip side, do you guys have this problem? The wife wants to spend a few bucks on clothes and you say "that's to much" "They don't pay for themselves" "You don't get a return on your clothes" etc. etc. but you go to a show and drop down big $$$ on a snake. I know my wife must love me to put up with a crazy hobby of ours.

I try to get her whatever she wants. First, because I'm a handful. Second..........The snakes. LOL!
With all the cash I've dropped on snakes...(And hopefully the "return" will make everything breakeven.) I have no "room" to not get her whatever she wants.
We are lucky men to have such loving and understanding wives. I'm sure you feel the same.

my girlfriend is great like that too. a while back i said i was thinking of getting some corn snakes, she didnt like snakes at all. on my birthday she took me out and bought me two baby corns for a present. she didnt really care for them at the beginning of shopping, but after holding them she kinda warmed up to them. when we got them home she was shaking while holding them as i set up their cage she said she was nervous they would bit her. now i have 2 corns, 2 hognose, and one boa. i work til 8pm usually, and am usually in the shower when she comes over ( im a mechanic). when i turn the water off, i can hear her talking to the snakes in baby talk. she has really gotten into my snake fixation, and i love her for it. i recently bought her a sulcata tortoise, which i also have one too. just 2 weeks ago she bought her first bearded dragon. what a girl.

Just recently I went all legal like and made my hobby into a business just so uncle sam could get his piece in case I ever made any money. Part of this was doing an inventory for my accountant. When I figured out I have well over $100,000 in breeders, cages, inventory etc. I could not beleive it. That does not count all the rats that are fed and gone. The worst part is I live in a $40,000 house and drive a $1000 car LOL. I guess some would say my priorities are a little out of wack. My advice, DO NOT ADD IT UP, it will only depress you. Craig

She says what if I thaw out a wrong package.....it all tastes like chicken anyways. Seems as though whenever I am in a store lately I just have to check out the rubbermaids...anyone else have this happen? Andy

about 4 years ago. It was likely correct within 10 bucks and I just don't look at it anymore. I don't have many snakes...non of them are anywhere near high dollar. Basically I have 13 BRB's...so not too much reptile wise, but I figured a cost on ALL my animals which includes many, many kitties and dogs including the birdfeeder in the backyard that is never without seed. I have 3 jobs and I spend 50% on my critters. Sometimes I am grateful that I can and other times I think I'm a complete fool. I've done this for the last 15 years. It's a damn good thing I'm single.....or maybe this is the reason I am! I hope this is just my "niche". Otherwise, I'm kinda a freak.

and I have a tiny collection compared to many other hobbyists, a notable point for me came when I purchased a separate upright freezer for my rats. It's not a big freezer, mind you, but it was sort of an evolutionary milestone for me - relating to my legless critters. I guess different things stand out for different people. One might think it would be the first big expenditure on a specific animal that would have me thinking about where this was going, as a hobby. It wasn't that first really expensive snake.......it was the silly freezer.....go figure. The freezer is nice and it lets me dedicate my fridge to people food only. Now, when my "normal" friends come over and open my fridge, they don't find RATSICLES

...I buy and sell just enough snakes and supplies so that with a straight face I can tell my wife I am making money at it. I buy and sell just enough snakes and supplies so that with the same straight face I can tell the IRS that I am not making any money at it.

Recently driving home from a show my mom went crazy about how much I spend and that I haven't really made any money yet. I looked at my current inventory of future breeders, a little over 7k! WOW!
And to think my dad said if I saved up for a car he would match what I saved, that means I could be driving a 14k car right now.
And that is not counting food and cage costs.
Then I told my mom what I would be makeing in college when they are all ready to breed, it made things a little better, lol.
