Gravid Beardie!!!

tegu2002 Nov 29, 2004 02:00 PM

Hi, We have a gravid bearded dragon, she has been gravid for at least a month now but still hasn't laid her eggs. She had been staying in the same cage with the male for a while and then we got a new female, while she was still pregnant. I don't know whether this affected her because she was always quite timid. Now it is very obvious she is gravid because you can see the eggs vividly. So yesterday we moved her into a different cage on her own but she still hasn't laid them. Do you think we should take her to the vet, or wait a few days or something? I hope I did the right thing in moving her, what do you think??

Please reply, I really need your help and it would calm me down alot too.

If you are correct about her having been gravid that long (and you may be because a female with the stress of a male in the SAME tank will OFTEN retain eggs) then you are going to need to have the eggs surgically removed. A dragon must lay their eggs within 2 days from the point you can actually see and feel them, usually withing 24 hours. If they are retained they start to mineralize and harden. They begin to rot also and if one breaks it will be fatal. If she has really had eggs as long as you think she is in serious danger.

When I felt her tummy, they were already hard, do you think it is too late? I will take her to the vet tommorrow!!

I really don't want her to die, otherwise it will be the second female we have lost. The last one was gravid too but we didn't know, we were still quite beginners.

Males and females shouldn't be cagemates anyway!!

You should go give her a properly setup laying bin of course. MOST dragons will not lay unless they can dig a tunnel and properly bury their eggs. You should leave her in this all night with the lights on and tomorrow get to a vet ASAP. They can do a spay on her and saver her. That would be the best thing for her anyway I think.
