Trouble with introducing 2 female dragons - HELP!

Snakemother Nov 29, 2004 02:10 PM

My husband's work had a pair of beardies in a big (4 foot by 2 foot) cage with everything they needed. The male was older than the female, and died of old age months ago. My husband's boss wanted to buy another from me to go with their lone female. I talked him into a female, as I thought they'd get along better. The female I choose is younger, but the same length as but not as bulky as the office female. I spent this past weekend introducing them by putting them together in a room (younger dragon a bit scared, but getting over it when I held her). Then yesterday put them in one of my enclosures together (this enclosure is quite escapable by thhe younger female, and also had a hide). They seemed fine together; although they didn't pile up to bask together, the younger didn't escape the cage and no one resorted to the hide.
Today my husband took them into work, rearranged the work cage, added the hide, and put them in. Five hours later, they circled each other and went after each other, biting tails, although there was no big open mouth biting and no injuries. The younger female is presently in the hide, digging.
My first instinct is to remove the new dragon and bring it home, operation unsuccessful. My husband thinks we should give them more time. Was that just a dominance spat, and they should be fine now, or do they hate each other and should be separated? Any advice is GREATLY appreciated!!!

Just because they are both female is no guarentee that they will get along. It sounds like dominance issues to establish a pecking order. As long as no one is getting hurt I'd let it go for now and see if it calms down.

Thanks for the quick repy! Yes, I think you're right - I called my husband back, and he said the "winner" hadn't followed the other dragon or harrassed her after she backed down, and they're cohabiting peacefully right now. Maybe it was just who's-gonna-be-boss, and they settled it. But he'll be keeping a close eye on them in case.
Thanks so much.
