Going On Vacation/Leaving Torts

becki71 Nov 29, 2004 04:05 PM

Hi! Okay this Febuary we are going to disneyland for a week. This is the first time leaving my babies! I have two Hermann torts, my oldest is a year and the other is eight months. Does anyone tell me what you do when you have to leave your torts for that long? I'm planning on leaving a care sheet. I don't know if it would be better to take them to someones house or have someone come to my house and check them once a day. It would be great if I could get a house sitter but I'm not going to hold my breath on that one. Any ideas would be greatly appreicated! Thanks!!!

Get a thermostat for you heat setup (I use the one bean farm sells for $30 it has an auto shutoff at 110F incase the tstat fails, very reliable and accurate) so you wont have to worry about that. Have their caretaker feed something simple for the week, like mazuri or whatever, the less complicated their job, the less chance they will screw up. Fresh water and you should be good to go. Oh yeah, fireproof the torts enclosure and get a smoke alarm loud enough for the neighbors to hear...

Thanks for the advice! Will I need that regulator for a ceramic heat emitter? I usually leave that on all them time since it is so cold right now. It has never gotten above 100 and that is on a hot day. Thanks!

I use the thermostat with a ceramic heat emitter, I like the idea that if something goes wrong (maybe with the house's heat) I know that my torts wont be cooked! Anyway, you would probably be fine since you ceramic emitter doesnt see to get too hot. If I left mine on all the time without a thermosat it would make the enclosure much hotter than I wanted. Really all you need is a fail proof way to keep the enclosure at the right temp, have lights on timers, make it easy to feed and water the torts and make it fireproof. Thats about all!

Oh yeah, have your vet's contact number handy (as well as the number to contact you) and tell the tort's care giver to call if there is ANYTHING that seems strange!

...will be a flipped/trapped youngster especially under a heat source for a prolonged period of time, therefore nothing better than a caregiver if you could find one...before you go, just put yourself into your bambino's shoes for a day to do a good preparation...flat no bumpy/climbable surface on basking/bathing spots...enclosure edge clearance...basic commonsense along with all those gadget available as mentioned in the previous posts...oh, yes: also try to ease your mind a little while on that trip...
