Veiled Chameleon Laying Eggs

mattg9979 Nov 29, 2004 06:55 PM

I have a female veiled chameleon that is having problems laying eggs. She has layed 4 successful clutches befor. She mated in late october and has been digging in a pot of slightly wet sand for the last 3 weeks. Everytime she would dig a hole she would fill it in. I have found 3 eggs scattered in the sand and today found another 4 on the bottom of cage. Brought her to the vet and they just gave her a shot of oxytocin and some liquid calcium. I just don't know why she is not laying. I don't believe she is egg bound because she has already passed a few. So today I put another bucket of potting soil with a plant in it about 8 inchs deep. Has any else had this problem and what was the outcome or resolution? Vet wants to perform surgery but since chameleons are sensitive to stresses such as that I wonder how the prognosis would be and if she stays egg bound then that is bad? Any advice Thanks

If she does not rid her body of the eggs, then yes, she'll die.
I've had to put down female veileds due to binding. And I've cut the eggs out myself. The way they carry their eggs is like a necklace of large pearls. Lined up in a membrane instead of a chain. If the necklace(?) gets tangled, then it is impossible for her to lay them without hemmoraging the membrane. However, she can occasionally get a few passed through.
In a normal laying process, she simply slides the pearls off the chain one by one until the last egg has passed. Then her body will reabsorb the membrane afterbirth.
Gross, but true,
