I checked out my gecko today and something was sticking out of his butt, it looked like some of his intestines...
I've seen iguanas push them out when pooping and they go back in but his isn't going back in. I don't know what to do and my vet won't be open until Wednesday!

BTW this is the gecko that I took in and it had parasites for awhile but is now recovering.

Is that a hernia? I would take him to the vet

herpvetconnection.com Try that site and find another vet and get your leo in today if possible.

Since no one is replying and you are probably freaking out I'll answer. I DON'T have experience with this but I believe it's a prolapse (you are not breeding him are you?, he looks too young and too thin). I also think it is very serious and you need to see a vet ASAP. Until you can see a vet you need to keep him VERY moist and free of anything that could cause an infection. Like I said I don't have experience with this but I would imagine if you have to wait until Wednesday there is a good chance it could dry out or become infected.

I have heard of some techniques you can do to try and get it to go back in on it's own. I think one way is a sugar bath but DON'T take my word on it. Do an archive search on prolapses and you might get something. In any case SEE A VET, can you imagine how painful and uncomfortable it would be if your intestines had to hang out for a couple of days. I would actually take him to an emergency vet right now if I were you. Even if they don't have experience with reptiles, they should be able to give you some help.

Here is a link to Dr. Gecko that goes into a little more detail.

Good luck and keep us informed. Please don't wait to see a vet, it is an emergency if they don't go back in.

I don't think it is his intestines. Just my opinion. Probably his "unit".

I took him to the local normal vet this morning and I made sure to keep his stuff moist last night. They pretty much just put some medicine on it and used something to push it back in. Heh that little trip was 60 bucks...but he seems happy now. :D

lisa_cristin Nov 30, 2004 03:40 PM

Good!!! I'm so glad that they were able to fix it and that you were able to take him to the vet so soon.

Sorry I didn't say it was his intestines, just a prolaspe. I just used intestines as a metaphore because it's easier to imagine that on a human.

OK, I didn't know if someone thought it was the intestines or not. I kind of read through it quick. No offense.

What you are seeing is a prolapsed cloaca. This can be very dangerous, but there are some things you can do to see if it will go back in.

1.) soak the gecko in about 1" of warm sugar water for about 30 minutes. There should be LOTS of sugar in the water.

2.) apply honey or Karo syrup to the prolapse using a Q-tip.

Keep doing this every 2-3 hours, and make sure the gecko is kept on clean paper towel. If this doesn't work, you will need to get the gecko to the vet.
