Question that's been on my mind... about eggbound BD's and the such...

funnyman527 Nov 29, 2004 11:17 PM

I kno that this happens in female chameleons, but can a female BD that's never copulated become eggbound? Could my female eventually get complications from not mating?
I do have a male that, once he get's big enough, could be mated with her, but other then that, i'd rather not have to deal with baby beardies. *not that i wouldn't love to be able to take care of little tiny babies, cuz i do miss those days * *lol*

thanks in advance for whoever takes the time to answer me.

Female beardies can produce eggs with or without a male. What causes eggbound normally is not providing an appropriate place to lay.

You could go ahead and breed them, if thats what you want, and then you can take the eggs, and slit each one, making sure everything is out of each egg with no chance of hatching.

HOWEVER - this produces a LOT of stress on the female, not only with mating but with having to produce and carry all those eggs. It really takes a toll on their bodies.

I would suggest not breeding them and just wait. How old is she now? Is she in the presence of a male (in the same room...can she see him?)

Good Luck

Both BD's are 7 1/2 months old. (I kno WAAAAAAAAYYYY too young to mate yet) and yes, she can see the male some of the time. Their cages are next to eachother, and then bottom half of the glass is covered (so they cant be right up in eachother's faces ever, but can still see eachother when on their perches. The male is still a little bit smaller than the female, so i wouldnt even consider mating them, until they were well over a year old each, and maybe a bit fatter each. Both dragons are 15+ inches (last tiem i measured, a month ago atmost) so they're a decent size each.

They can produce eggs without mating, although I have had my female for quite a while and she has never laid an egg. It is healthier for them to not breed, so if you don't want to you don't have to. If they did mate and she laid eggs you could just flush the eggs, they would need to be incubated in order to hatch.
