Yellow Tail Cribo feeding information!!

Gilbert Thompson Jul 01, 2003 05:38 PM

Hello all,
I tried something new on some beautiful Yellow Tail Cribos I purchased from Don Bordner.
I got to thinking what would make young Yellow Tails better feeders and this is what I did.
I went to the pet store and bought a Arrowana fish. This is a South American fish that frequents the surface of the water. Therefore, being easily seen and a particularly shinny fish. After I paid $45 for the fish I took it home and rubbed in on some mouse fuzzies. There was only one out of the four that did not gulp down three fuzzies each. I contribute that to her being in shed.
This may have been mere luck but it worked for me. So I figured I would share the information with everyone else.
Thanks,
Gilbert

Congrats for "walking the talk" & taking your stewardship seriously.
I'm puzzled by the number of folks who will really food stress neonate guardians (& other spps.) into taking rodents right off the bat; it isnt a natural prey for them. I dont think you had to go to that cost tho! I suspect most fish skin scents would have worked as well. Variations of this method have been reported on this forum several times in the past.
I havent done it, but from a publication Dean shared w/ me, I learned that exoskeletal remains of various arthropods were commonly found in wild neonates & thus I suspect plump crickets; ~ 4-5 week old, would likely be an excellent first prey. Mojo when absolutely into a frenzy for wild live lizards when he was under 6 mos.

Thanks I appreciate the kind words! I tried Gold fish at first with no luck! That is why I though about a fish that was native to their range.
Thanks,
Gilbert

That was pretty creative thinking to track down a fish from their range.
Next time you might want to try scenting with the fishy water in a can of tuna. I tried this with a couple of my cribos before they were taking non scented and they went nuts for it. (BT's and Uni's, never tried it with a YT) May or may not work but it's a pretty cheap experiment. F/T chicks worked well with my YT before I was able to get him back on mice.

Gilbert,

It's really low of you to take advantage of Don Bordners kindness and trust and not finish paying him for the 2.2 c.b. YT's that you cuffed before trading them off for that calico Monaocle Cobra and other hot snakes.
I ended up with the other male YT that you traded before paying for it.
By the way I got Cleo and she's doing just fine here.
What happened, Dean wouldn't send her to you before receiving
payment???
What you did wasn't cool at all.

Bobby
