Baby HOGNOSES NOT EATING....what should we do???

cv768 Nov 30, 2004 11:59 AM

We have two baby hognoses...

The male has not eaten since we've had him...which would be a little over 2 weeks. The female ate last week and now she hasn't eaten.

We tried feeding them both pinkie heads and after they didn't eat that...we dipped the pinkie heads in tuna water which didn't seem to work either.

What should we do? Any suggestions...or more like when should we actually start worrying?

Two weeks is not too bad. I would be more concerned if it had been four weeks. In the meantime, eliminate handling but keep an eye on their activities. Don't try to feed them more than twice a week, because that only becomes a disturbance. Also invest in a digital scale so that you can keep accurate weights on them to determine if they are losing large amounts of weight. If you have any access to frogs for scenting, that would also be ideal.

why don't you read down the page for other questions like yours--there are dozens, and they contain plenty of information about your situation. You don't even have to go into the archives, just scroll and look at everything that says 'new hognose won't eat' or something to that effect.

I collected up some toads off the road before it got cold and just keep them alive in the fridge until they are needed. Get yourself some toads, or a toad to scent pinkies with.
