Eggbound?

jgjulander Nov 30, 2004 12:11 PM

One of my females has a retained egg, at least that is what I think it is. She laid this past spring, so if it is an egg it has been there for a while. It is a hard mass just a couple inches from her cloaca. Does anyone have any experience on how to get her to pass this? Is surgury the only option? I would rather not go the surgury route, just because I am not sure how good my herp vet is with reptile surgury, but if that is the only way, then that's what I'll do. Any help is appreciated.

I don't know what the name of the drug is but it can be given to them to make them start having contractions I've had to get it for chameleons in the past. Also make sure you get it x-rayed before you jump to any conclusions. When was the last time she took a crap?

The drug to induce contractions is called Oxytocin

Hi
Surgery should be your last option, there is a few things you should try first. Warm water soaks and gentle massages. Calcium supplement injections can get muscles working again. Sometimes a feed may stimulate the system. If that dont work Then oxytocin or vasotocin injection.
I had a spotted python that had two eggbound, luckily she passed them, though it took 3 weeks of all the above, big relief

good luck

I'm not a vet by any means, but if its been that long since she's laid I doubt it would be a retained egg. I would think if it were a retained egg, it would have decomposed and killed her. My thinking is its probably urates or a bowel impaction. I'd soak then exercise. Best of luck Justin.
