WJXX (Jacksonville, Florida) 29 November 04 Python Found in First Coast Home (Deanna Fene)
Palatka, Florida: Marvel Hagen had lived in her home near the St. Johns River in Palatka for two weeks, when she discovered a slithery intruder in her kitchen.
"I saw a snake. It was coiled up in front of the fridge," said Hagen.
The snake had been living underneath the fridge for months. It had even shed it's skin. The snake was a Ball Python about four feet long.
Sheriff's deputies helped Hagen get the snake out from under the fridge, and out of her house.
It wasn't long before she found out the people living in the house before her had a pet snake that got out of it's cage. They thought the snake had escaped to the back yard, but apparently it stayed close by.
"They've been gone for about a month or two," said Hagen.
Greg Hanks owns G & G Rodents and Reptiles in Palatka. He says ball pythons are harmless.
"They're so docile. They're not aggressive at all," Hanks says.
He adds, Ball Pythons can costs between $70 and $10,000, and can grow as long as six feet. He says they're not dangerous at all and make good first pets.
Harmless or not, Hagen doesn't want to take any chances. So she's gotten a new pet, a cat, to keep away any future slithery intruders.
