Anyone Know How To Report Crappy Pet Shops

bxherp Jul 01, 2003 05:45 PM

Hey everyone...Living in New York City you will find that there are not too many pet shops that take good care of their reptiles. Some of these pet shops includes petland (they are sh*tty),petco (they suck), and pet smart (I aint totally mad at them). It is unfortunate that I must travel all the way to Long Island which is a two hour drive from my house, on a good day, to get any good reptiles and to conversate with people in there that know about reptiles. Those people are great. I should mention that this place only sells reptiles. Well my question is this...I am getting really upset at seeing the conditions that these reptiles must live in, while fish and other little "cute" animals live in better conditons...Is there someone I can contact to report the horrible conditions these animals must face? Just to tell you a quick story...I went into a pet shop about a 2 weeks ago to look at the reptiles. When I got in there I was disgusted to see 2 burmese pythons about 4 feet each in a five gallon tank. Not to mention they had dirty water...Also,I saw two baby corn snakes and a garter snake all in a critter's carrier cage thing...My fiance saw my face...She nearly dragged me out of there because I was so livid...Sorry about the long message...I am in one of those ranting moods today so if I don't make totally alot of sense please don't hold it against me...-ELvy

Since most of the stores you mentioned are chains, you might try calling their headquarters to register a complaint and ask them to call you to let you know what they did in response.

I am not sure that will work, but it can't hurt. Most of the chain stores in my area have corporate phone numbers they ASK you to call if you see pets kept in objectional conditions. It makes the whole chain look bad.

Sometimes people put things in too small containers while they're rearranging...are you sure this was really what they were kept in all the time? It's not really an excuse but maybe they were out of space and were hoping for a couple sales to free something up. Either way, it's sad...and a dirty water dish is what ticks me off more.

I know someone already suggested calling the corporate headquarters of the chains but it may do more good call the local shelter and ask them who would be most appropriate to contact. If corporate gets a call from the authorities, I'm sure something will happen MUCH faster!
