HELP snake still won't eat

SnakeMania Nov 30, 2004 01:37 PM

I have a BCI who a little over two years old now. He has gone through spells in the past wehre he wouldn't eat, but never this long. It has been ~6 weeks since he's eaten. In that time, I have made at least 3 attempts to feed him...I am feeding live small rats -he is over four feet long, with maybe a 1.5=2" diameter at his thickest point. It seems that there is still some fatty tissue on him, from the way he feels, but he is starting to look a bit wrinkly if he coils real tight. Temperature on the hot end shows about ~85, cool end about ~81...He has a heat pad ont he warm side, which I just turned up a bit, and he feels warm to the touch if he's ben over there. The thermometer (hot side) is ont he back of the cage about 4" fromthe bottom of the tank, and by but not necessary right under the daytime light (which sits outside the tank). Humidity is generally between 50% and 60%, but does tend to vary... I don't mist him, although I have soaked him in the bath tub in the past to help with problem sheds....

The only changes I can think of (aside from turning the heat up last week) is his hide box. I had been cutting the bottoms off of cardboard boxes and making little doorways for him to enter them, and using them as a hide. Well, he always [bleep]s on them, and I ran out of boxes. So, I found a huge fake log for turtles which I thought would be nice and easy to clean, and of course he won't use it. So I took it out, and he has been hiding under his newspaper since then... He has water - I have a litter box that I fill up with water and leave on the cool end of the cage (it's big enough for him to soak in)... He has branches to bask with under the hot side, so he can get closer to the bulb....I could do a better job keeping his tank clean, but I doubt that is the source of the problem, and I can;t see anythign else I am doing wrong..

Any and all ideas and/or criticisms are welcome. Thanks!

If the skin is starting to wrinkle it could just be he is trying to shed. I know same snakes will go off feeding during this time but six weeks does seem a little long. Having a proper hide box could make a difference. If the snake is stressed (because there is no shelter) there is a chance that he won't eat.

You could try a smaller prey item as well. That has worked for me in the past . Good luck.

He shed not too long ago. I suppose it could be another shed, but he doesn't rally look like it... I used to try to feed him every 5-10 days , and he just wouldn't eat, so I feed him every 2 weeks or so, with mixed luck. I have read some that sya that's okay , some that sya he needs to be fed every 5 days, ragardless. Any opinions, preferrably with facts, regarding this? Is 4' and 1.5-2" wide nromal for a little over two years (2 years, 3 months, approx.)? I understand they vary quite a bit?

Sometimes I'll get him two rats, to make sure he's had his fill, and then he won't eat the second one. I am already feeding him small rats, when in tht past he would eat medium rats, although "small" and "medium" seem to depend on what stock they have in at the present time...He still sheds every 1.5 - 2 months, but he certainly isn;t growing like he was int he past...He has been a problem ever since switching to rats, but I don;t know of anythign else readily available to feed him except mice, which are too small...

Thanks for the response. Please keep 'em coming!

Male boas go off feed this time of year. At least some do. I would replace his hide and continue to offer him food every week or two. He should start feeding again when he's good and hungry.

I feed mine every 7 days or so but I know plenty of keepers that feed theirs every 2 weeks just with larger prey items. It is normal for their growth to slow down after the first couple years as well.

by his age, he may be more interested in finding a mate right now than eating.
