Hurt Chameleon...help

skinsr4reel Nov 30, 2004 03:06 PM

I have a Veiled, about 5 months old or so... He was doing very well, until last night he fell in his cage, after hanging upside down on the wire mesh cage... Anyway, hes takin falls before, but nothing hurt him. Well last night that happened, and he couldnt move at all after that. I thought he might have broken his neck or something...Every 30 seconds he was gaping for air. I thought his end was near, well I put him to rest on my bed, and about 20 minutes later I see him moving his back legs pretty good. And he was trying to bite my finger (Like he usually does lol) He wasnt gaping anymore, and he was trying to walk, but not using his front 2 legs (arms?). Anyway, I let him rest overnight to see if he would regain strength in his arms, he slept good, I woke up and he is doing good. He stil cant move his arms though, I mean he can, just not that good. He will drag his chest on the floor when he tries to walk. I hand fed him a few wax worms and even some sweet worms. I dont know what this could be. I mean, it looked like he was totaly paralyzed last night, and now he can move, just not his arms that well? Anyone know what this could be? Should I just give it time? Let me know

OMG!!!! THIS IS SOOOOOOO WEIRD!!! the exact same thing happened to my chameleon yesterday! Well, I was just holding my adult male veiled chameleon (hes a big one, almost 20 in!) and my little 5 month old "noticed" my other big veiled through the screen caging, and actually jumped and took a four foot fall!! Poor baby, he looked as if he was having seizures. After the seizure epic, he remained still, as if he was parylized, I felt soo bad for him, becuase he was doing soo well. I still had my hopes up, and put him in a humid, dark, warm screened cage overnight. The next morning he made a full recovery, he evened seemed to be more energetic and feeding better! (mabey that fall knocked some sense into the poor little guy) Well know he is doing fine, and hopefully yours will make a full recovery! If he doesnt heal in a couple of days, He may have broken his leg, so check and see if his pained leg has any large bumps, becuase it may be a bone! As long as he is eating, thats a very good sign, and if worse comes to worse, just swing by the vets and they could help him out! Hope this has helped, kind of a coinsedence though!
Best of luck -Michele-

This may be a random reference but one of our cats when he was a kitten ran head first into a mirror and we thought he had broken his neck because he wouldnt move his front legs. Took him to the vets and found out he had only sprained it and such, gave him a shot of something to relax the mmuscles. He started to move his front feet immediately on the ride home and he was good as new in a couple days.
Anyway could just be he sprained something or bruised something in his neck during the fall. If he has signs of getting better / eating etc then I wouldnt give up hope for a while.

Hes doing better, he seems exactly the same, just cant use his front arms that well. They arent broken or anything because he can move them, he just doesnt like to use them, im thinking theres a slight sprain or something. If I hold him by his front arms, theres resistance, so there not just hanging there, he can pull up slightly. I have him on the bottom of his cage, and I am hand feeding him until he is at full recovery, but hes doing fine, he sleeps at night and everything. If anything gets worse, its off to the vets.
