first time breeder

umop_apisdn Nov 30, 2004 07:45 PM

ok, i just caught one of my 2 male cresteds mating for the first time since reaching maturity. so he finished his thing, and i have heard from others that males will lick their everted hemipene after copulation. sure enough, i viewed this male doing so. however, his licking became a little intense, and it seemed to me as though be might have been biting it a little bit. since then, it's re-inserted itself, but im wondering can he, well, castrate himself by doing this or hurt himself otherwise?

I've never breed before, but im sure he knows what he's doing. I think most reptiles do what they do instinctually, and rarely make mistakes that harm themselves. This is what I have oserved with almost ever reptile ive encountered. If any harm comes to the animal......it's normally the persons fault(or a predator)

yea, i know its kinda anti-evolutionary to bite at your own reproductive organs, was just curious. thanks for the input though.

should i be worried about my male crested gecko biting at his hemipene after copulation?

are you sure it was biting? it's like watchin a mother aligator move the babies around. how could something with so much potential to kill move those tiny babies around without harming them? i would only consider it biting if the eyes of your gecko were starting to sink in as it was biting.

Remember that a crested has almost no teeth and their jaws are weak as well, they can barely bite a cricket in half. And on top of that, do you know how excrutiatingly painful that would be?!!!!!I don't think it would do that on purpose.
