Whats Wrong WIth Him?

MultipleMorphHerps Nov 30, 2004 07:54 PM

My iguana has more than usual fluids coming out of his nose when he sneezes but no symptoms of a resp. infection (swollen throat, etc...) I was thinking since it is so dry in our house that I would set up a humidifier to do on 3x's a day for one hour each time (not or average humidifier, it puts a lot of water in the air).

Do you think this will help he just started it and we just hit cold weather here? Also he is skinny and I was looking through all the pics of iguanas and he looks nothing like them color wise... what should I do? I have UV (update each year) and temps are all good. Could someone post how, how much, and what they feed their iguanas for color and fattening up?

do you mean your iguana is underweight and dark in color? and can you explain the weird substance coming out of his nose? what are you feeding and how often? what are your temps at? sorry but this is all important to figure out what may be wrong. i feed my iguanas collard greens, mustard greens, turnip greens, green beans, squash, carrots, mango some other things i pick up here and there. i try to give them something different everyday. i feed once a day but they eat alot! if they finish their bowls i fill it back up untill they stop eating. if your iguana is dark in color ,like brown , it may be a sign that he is sick or stressed out. although i have seen perfectly healthy igs that were brownish in color. good luck! i hope your iggy is ok.

His temps are at 95 basking and 75 around the rest of the cage.

I feed him collard greens, mustard greens, carrots, bell pepper (for color 1-2x a month), bannana, and other things.I am feeding him more than usual now to see if he'll take down all the greens and if so maybe he just needs more food.

The fluid coming out of his nose is like watery not mucus, that is why I don't think he has a resp infection. He hasn't sneezed much or at all since I've put the hidifier next to his cage.

Instead of 75 degree ambient temperature in his cage, it should be 80-85. This is very important. During the day, 75 seems cold to him. At night though, 75 is perfect. Your basking temp is good.

Good luck and all my best for your green guy,

Roger

Many people make the mistake of giving their ig too much protein, like chicken, shrimp, etc, because it fattens them up. The truth is while it fattens them up, more than a tiny bit of protein is terrible for igs. Keep giving your ig the dark leafy veggies like collard greens, kale, romaine (never iceburg lettuce) and suppliment it with some ig pellots...I actually have some extra you could have for free if interested.

If humidity is a problem try misting him every day with a spray bottle, or giving him an even bigger water dish. They will both help. Good luck.

has he had a fecal done lately? sometimes iguans have a hard time gaining weight if they have parasites.
