Is my 3 yr old Oketee Male is self brumating?

Jonah Nov 30, 2004 07:57 PM

So this guy just refused his mouse for the third week in a row. He has always been a good eater and appears otherwise healthy, even somewhat active in his tank. He also hadn't defecated in 3 weeks. Though he did in the sweater box when I had him out to feed him yesterday. I even decided to try a live mouse on him to try and entice him but to no avail. (My 03 butter male was happy to finish off the mouse. He struck so violently at the mouse that he missed twice in a span of a 1/2 second before connecting and coiling on the mouse on the 3rd strike in the same 1/2 second. It was like boom boom boom as the entire sweater box moved.) Anyway, I did decrease the amount of artificial light on the snake room timer. The room does have a window and they are exposed to the natural cycle of light. Maybe It's just the fact that this is his first winter as an adult. He is big and can definitely afford to miss a few meals. He's 48.5 inches and 640 grams. Anyone else have this happen to their snakes as they matured?

I have 3 corns and a cal king. My corns are all still eating, but for the last two winters my cal king just stops feeding in October.
I have no choise but to place her in my closet to brumate. I bring her out in Feb. and after warming her up for a week, she begins feeding.
You're male is probably looking for some rest.
Good luck with him.

It's not uncommon for males to stop feeding during the period that they feel like mating as well as brumating. Since you say he's still reasonably active it may be the case that he doesn't care about seasons and would just like to meet a young lady. It has happened in my collection and in several other collections i know of. You need only worry if your snake appears to start losing substantial weight, keep a good eye on his behaviour and make sure he has fresh water everyday, whether in brumation mode or mating mode, i'm sure he'll be fine but keep us updated...

To those of you that believe corn snakes just look like big worms, at least admit they're the most beautiful worms you've ever seen...
