The Fruits of Last Sunday

Gentlemantw0 Nov 30, 2004 09:28 PM

Pictures taken in the field are much more attractive than the ones taken in my hands. I'm working on finding a good digital camera to call my own so that I can take it in the field with me. Until then, at least you people up north will have something to look at while you are freezin to death.

This was the first find of the day. It was about 830 am and only in the high 50's. This guy was making his way across the road. This was a lifer for me. Florida Box Turtle.

After driving for a while I decided to visit an abandoned house I knew of about half an hour away. The house burned down a long time ago and there is tin and garbage everywhere. The first tin I flipped uncovered this little guy. He was extremely docile and calm, I'm wondering what is wrong with him. He has the attitude of a corn. Southern black racer.

Here's the belly shot of the same snake. Still a young guy, but all traces of pattern on top are gone.

A few tins later revealed this little guy. Under normal circumstances I would have never brought one home, but I figured I could use the picture. Southern Ringneck Snake.

and the belly shot.

Next I went searching for some things to flip. I nearly missed the field with about a dozen chunks of fence laying in it but somehow I spotted it. After flipping all the fence and finding nothing, I headed back to the car. In the ditch beside the road their was an upside lunchables container. As I walked by I kicked it over only to reveal this little gem. Only my second in 6 years. Pine Woods Snake.

Before calling it quits I drove down some more back roads. There was a southern couple trying to fix an unknown problem in their truck so I stopped to offer a phone call. They told me they had it handled and I asked them if they knew of any abandoned houses or places with artificial cover. Sure enough they told me of one not even a mile away. I looked all around the house, flipping things, and eventually made my way into the barn. I nearly missed this guy sitting in the rafters. Nearly killed myself climbing up there to get him too. I know it seems like a common snake but it's only my third in 7 years so I was excited. Red rat snake.

....Docile because the temps were low and not to mention he's about to shed! Nice find!!

Ryan-reptilian Nov 30, 2004 10:26 PM

My reply was about the racer you found, not the corn in which my post followed!

Very nice for some early winter herping! I dont seem to have any luck when it's cold, other than the occasional striped racer, tarantula, and lots of kangaroo rats!! Keep em' coming to help us all through the cold months!
Happy herping!!

Great posts for this time of year. I about gave up on this forum, it was becoming pretty dead.

Sounds like you had a good day! I also brought home a Southern ringneck I found roadherping Saturday(first one I've seen there), aside from that it was the usual suspects: Couple of ribbons, waters, and a garter. Also, two others I could not stop to ID because of traffic. Strange you find so few red rats in Central Fla., I've seen a decent number this year.

I need to put a digital camera on my holiday list.....
