Cresteds and water???

robdamanii Nov 30, 2004 10:16 PM

Hey folks,

I've got a crested in a 20 gallon tall, and I'm looking at putting in a small humidifier (the kind that makes cold mist ultrasonically in the tank) into her tank, and I'm worried about her falling into the water and drowning (particularly while I'm away).

Are they indeed smart enough to NOT fall in, or is it better to just net off the top of the container the water is in for safety (it obvoiusly wouldn't hurt...)

Come on, SOMEBODY answer!!! I want to know this one too!

on two things...
a: How deep is the water??
b: How big is the crested??

If the water is shallow enough for her to go into and keep her head above water without struggling then she will be fine. If she has to struggle to keep her head above the water then it is no good, because if she struggles to keep her head up she may get tired and drown. This is not something I read or experienced, but I think it makes sense for all animals...

Water is for a fogger, about 8-9 inches deep, and she's about 5 inches from base of tail to tip of nose.

I guess I'll work on a screen system for it.

i saw a pretty cool design at the chicago reptile show. the fogger was recessed into the top of the cage with a snap on top and a few small holes on the side of the dish. the fog just rolled down from the top. quite a good idea. that way you also don't have to worry about the animal pooping in the water and ruining the fogger.
