My corn is stuck to duct tape... please help

Felissa Dec 01, 2004 08:28 AM

Monday one of my corns escaped. Rule of cornsnake owning, if it's going to make a break for it, it'll be your most expensive one. (lav het stripe) Well I just found him, but that's because he managed to get stuck to some duct tape covering a hole in the wall. I had taped up all the holes the last time a corn had escaped, I guess the weather had loosened it up a bit since then. Unfortunately he is REALLY stuck on there. I can't just peel it off without damaging him. How am I supposed to get this off? He's only about three months old, very small. I don't even know if he'll be able to eat. It's stuck from just below his head and about two inches of it is stuck to the side of his body. I've cut most of it off so he can crawl around a little.

I have Goo Gone, but I want to know if it is safe to use. He's not due to shed for a while.

I really need to stick to herps with legs. Argh.

Cooking Oil should do the trick. I have been in that situation before and cooking oil gets under the tape and loosend it up very quickly. I didn't submerge it, just poured it on the edge where the tape is on the snake. Give it a shot, I bet it helps. Tom Stevens

Thank you, I'll try that. I hope it works!

nah dont stick to herps with legs...get some heavy duty screen top clips! That should really help you out!

As far as the duct tape, I wouldn't use goo gone or any "sticky" remover. You can get it off...but you gotta work fast. Take some mineral oil and start working at one corner and rub it and it will slowly dissolve the glue on the duct tape. If you cant get mineral oil, just try plain old vegetable oil. That should work just as well.

Then when you get the tape off, you'll probably have some residual stickyness so dust him lightly with plaster of paris and that will kep him from stickin to everything. From what i've read, this will cause him to go into a shed early and get rid of it.

Good luck!

I wish it were that easy! The first time I had a bunch of family over. Somebody either took my opal out of her tank and dropped her and didn't tell me (in the case of my little cousins, I wouldn't be surprised) or just didn't lock the top properly. By the time I had a minute to check on everybody she was gone. This time around it was my fault. I underestimated the ability of corns to escape anything. It was a cheap lid, but I didn't think he could reach the top of the tank.

Thank you for your suggestions, I'll try them as soon as my bf gets home. We both had to hold the snake this morning just to cut the extra tape off. Poor little guy is really cranky.

Wouldn't you be cranky if you got stuck and couldnt get out?

Also about people handling them...I have strict rules that everyone knows when they come around my snakes. First NOBODY opens and/or closes the tanks except me. If i'm busy, you get to look through the glass. Second, I only let two out of a cage at a time...and never if there is a huge gathering...such as a party. intoxicated people tend to act like idiots around...well everything. I have a quick rundown all my friends have heard on handling and care and such...and everyone i let handle a snake, i closely watch for a while to make sure that they arent hurting or freaking out the snake...in turn keeping them from getting bit! If a little kid (cousin or nephew or whatever) is handling it...I only let one snake out at a time and stay right there with him or her.

My 2nd cousins (ages 5 and 8) both love my snakes (one boy one girl), and they know that if they dont follow my rules they wont get to handle them any more, and their mom will punish 'em also.

for keeping teenagers out though...i'd really reccomend get some small locks for the lids of your cages. just small brackets, glue to the glass and glue to the lid, and put a tiny lock on each side. this will keep unauthorized access out. I'm moving into an apartment with some friends next fall...I have a feeling i'll be putting locks on all my cages.
