Suwanee Kings .....

Keith Hillson Dec 01, 2004 08:45 AM

I dont have much knowledge on the Suwanee's as Ive never had or seen one in person. What are the characteristics of a Suwanee ? Here are a couple of pics from Kevin Enge. Are these typical ? These are both Wildcaught males form the Jacksonville area.

The "Suwanee" King, as I understand it, is a Florida/Eastern intergrade from Northeast Florida, specifically the areas surrounding Jacksonville. Not sure exactly where the name came from, as the Suwanee river is quite a bit west of there. The pictures you posted, especially the top one, are what I think of as a Suwanne king. Kind of a light colored intergrade look. Like I said in my earlier post, apparently used to be very common around Jacksonville, now hard to find. I don't think there is a specific description of a "Suwanee", just a name that somehow came to be used to describe intergrades from that area.

The pics I posted before are not what I am talking about. It will take a couple of days to get a photo of the male in queastion cuz he just ate a huge meal and looks like he is going into shed as well(I love kings). So it might be a week or to if does shed but when I post the pics you will hopefully be able to tell the difference. Also I have followed the trail of people to a guy who says he catches them once every year or so but not for the last four or five. He claims they are very close to the Suwannee River and he thinks they are a intergrade of a Goini a eastern and a florida. Who knows.
Thanks Jason
Check Keiths site. There are some on his Florida page.

The only "Suwanee" king I have ever seen was at Hogtown herp a few years back. It looked more like the second animal. It was basically an eastern with a lot of speckling in the dark areas. Frankly, the should have spelled it "Uglee" kingsnake.
