Question for breeders....

mdc Dec 01, 2004 09:55 AM

For those of you that use one male to breed two females in one season, do you feed the male between females? My male has just about done his job with the first female, and I was wondering whether or not I should feed him before putting him in with the next female. I was afraid it might kill his drive. What do you all think? Also, should I give him a couple weeks to rest, or just put him straight in with the next girl.

Thanks in advance.

Good question. When I do use 1 male for more than 1 female yes I will offer food. If he eats I will wait about a week before introducing to the other female. If he does not eat I will introduce him the next day to check things out.

This was my first year breeding boas. I have one male breeder who is finishing up on his third female. I have fed him right along, but at about 2 week intervals, and I put him right back in with the female. He would sit around a couple days and then pass some urates. Then back to breeding he would go and pass stool a week later. I am giving him much smaller rat though. Like about a 3rd to half size of normal. He has been very active. I noticed that temps seemed more critical to his breeding. 80 - 82 seems to be right, although I still keep a hot spot available, they spend most time in the cooler temps. Hope this helps as I am really just learning. Thanks Andy

This is my first year of breeding so I am no expert,But when I found that my high pink male was just courting an that was it I switched to a 3 year old kahl strain het for albino an with him, well he dont care what the temps are, wether it is day or night he don't care!He is one bad 6ft breeding machine! With him I let him breed for 2 weeks then when he is taking one of his very short breaks, lol,I will pull him out an try my best to not get nailed cause he don't wan't me bothering him!lol,An I will give him his normal large rat an he eats an takes a day break an is right back at the top of his tank wanting out so I put him in he urates an goes back to work!An it seems like hes turning them large rats into solid muscle! He isnt a mean boa,I reckin he just dont want to be bothered with food while he is in with a female,But I cant see letting him breed himself to death!Heck he don't even care if you watch!I fell blessed with having a good breeder like he is!Hopefully I will get a female het for next season an be able to prove him out!Sry this was kind of long but I hope it helps!Eric[Hypoboa]
