Moment you decided get a monitor

drzrider Dec 01, 2004 12:03 PM

Do you remember the moment in which you decided that you wanted a monitor in your home?

I remember mine. I saw a baby water dragon and I thought it would be cool and my girlfriend (future wife) said it was cute. I went home built an enclosure and researched the heck out of them. A week or 2 later I bought it and took it home. In my research of the dragons I found a local exotic animal show and attended. A guy there had these cool looking creatures that were about 3 feet long. After walking by and looking at them a few times the guy took one out of the Rubbermaid and handed it to me. There I was, holding a blackthroat monitor for the first time. I knew I had to have one. It felt so unreal to stand there and hold a sizeable reptile that looked like the dinosaurs I studied as a child. I did not buy it, but I kicked myself for a whole year for not getting it. I studied monitors of all kinds and learned all I could. A year later I felt that I knew enough about them that I could keep one in a good captive environment. Here it is, a few years later and I am still fascinated with them.

There are chameleons, pythons, and monitors in my jungle room.

I was probably 10 or 12. The local university had a museum with a few living animals and lots of preserved/stuffed animals. As I recall, the living critters were a lungfish, a couple of bullsnakes, and a big salvator monitor. I was fascinated by that monitor. I wanted one ever since. It took me over a decade until I could get a monitor of my own, but that is when my fascination started.

I wanted one ever since I saw a Komodo Dragon on some wild life show when I was 7. Now, 14 yrs later, I finally got one, and I'm hooked.

oh oh oh me next, i rememeber about ten years ago, i was in my local petstore buying mice for my burmese, and ball pythons when i saw monitors in person for the first time, it was some savannahs and some niles, they were so awesome, i read about them nonstop, and sold my snakes, then bought a pair of savannahs and a mangrove monitor about a year later, since then i have been keeping monitors off and on, mostly rescues. Now i am focused on properly caring for my white and black throat monitors, so extremely awesome, I want them all.

Unlike many people, my live did not begin with Komodos. Sure, I had seen them and "wanted" one, but I wanted one of everything. I got a book from my grandma on my 13th birthday. Encyclopedia of Reptiles and Amphibians by Breene(?). I read that book a million times and stared at the pictures. In that book are two pictures of salvadorii. That is when I NEEDED a monitor (the pictures in there of basilisks are what moved my basilisk want from a want to a NEED as well). Fortunately, at age 15-16 when I tried to actually get a salvadorii, the dealer told me they were illegal. I really think he realized he was talking to some kid who did not need a salvadorii. I did not get my first monitor until I was 20, a nile. So long ago.

Monitors, monitors everywhere
and all the food they ate.
Monitors, monitors everywhere,
their parents loved to mate.

Oddly enough in a Petco. Watching a juvi stalk his dinner was interesting as hell, made me want one. Sadly though I have many other projects that need money and space before I can get a monitor. Someday I'll get one.
