question...

what is your definition of "locality"?

i've wondered this many times... is locality:
-found by this tree under this rock by this river..., or...
-found 20 miles north of ______________..., or...
-found in the NE portion of __________(fill in the country)... or...
-found in ___________(fill in the country)... or...
-found in this region of the continent

just curious. the thing that prompted me to post was that i was actually wondering what Hermann considered to be "locality" because he says he doesn't want locality animals used in crossbreeding projects. but, if you follow a STRICT definition of "locality", then the only people with access to these animals (collection data enthusiasts) would most likely never even consider crossing them (because it's such a pain to find animals with collection data). but, if he accepts the less stringent definition, something like... found in the lower half of Suriname, or even just "Suriname"... then i could see the threat of "locality" animals being used for such projects.

so... thoughts?

thanks for reading and hopefully posting,
jonathan

I think it depends on who you ask. Some are content to refer to the country as a locale, others consider more specific or precise coordinates a definition for locality. I think the more precise you get with regard to locality, the risk of inbreeding becomes greater.

That this is a very difficult question to answer. It is not that there are dividing lines and the snakes on this side look that way and the snakes on that side look this way…..So what would you consider a Locality to be. Is the Colombian boa from extreme North Colombia any different then the boa from extreme south Panama? I know that the Boas in Colombia differ greatly from each side of the Andes Mountain range, but the Leticia Colombian Boa that I got from Ben last year looks amazingly like a Peruvian Boa, down to the pretty red tail? Some say they can tell by the looks of a Boa, but that differs greatly. I have no good answer for this question. I guess we will just have to breed them all together and make my Boa Constrictor Domestica that I am working on LOL
