1.2 of the odd ones are CH from WC market ones. They are pigs...the other 2.1 are cb and come from somebody (not sure who) through a breeder in Texas. I also have some from a friend who use to breed mandarins--so very diverse genetics.

I use to have a weird diamond-ringed one that was unique to a specific province in China (can't recall the name off hand) but it has since passed.

so it should be interesting to see what your various offspring look like. I've got a really nice LTC male from Napa Valley and a pair each from Rex Knight, Larry Keller and a german breeder whose stock I got through Gregg Feaster. I should start producing offspring for the first time next year and I'm very excited by the prospect. There are a number of mandarin keepers with really nice stock here on this forum. But it's especially nice to see a new face (unless I'm just not recognizing your username).

check it daily. The stock is all new...I look for new stock just to outcross...thanks for the compliments and good luck w/ those animals--my coxi are from bushmaster overseas via Napa Valley.

The hatchling I have prefers fish and turns his nose up at pinks. I tried feeding him again last night, even though his eyes are completely opaque (hey you never know when they'll surprize you and eat), and no dice with a tiny live pink. I left two fish in his dish, and this morning they're gone.
Beautiful Mandarins and Coxi you have there as well! I see from you pics that the Coxi will fill out somewhat as adults (mine is an early 04, but eats like crazy).
Thanks for posting your pictures and good luck in the coming season with your pairs! I know I'll be looking for mates for my Coxi and Rhyno sometime in the future .

Steve Emerick of Napa Valley told it to me and it worked like a charm. Take a small dish, like one you would get meal worms in at Petsmart and place 1 small guppy or whatever fish in it--it needs a lid and complete darkness. Let it eat. Then place another one in. Be sure to keep the snake in the deli cup w/ the lid on so it has to eat. The next time do the same thing but after it eats the first fish and that feeding response is struck, put in a small pinky afterword. The scent of the fish will be in the deli cup and both of mine converted on their first attempts at it. Now they take straight from the tongs.

Just a suggestion.

Thanks for the nice compliments....the coxi should breed soon--I'm holding the female back a bit for now but the male is ready to go. Your right, they are eating everything including rat pups occasionally. The rhynos I have a while for. I would be glad to be of assistance when they produce

I'll try to snap pics of the my caves, prasina, and japanese forest rat when I get a chance

Any tips on breeding Rhynos? I have 2.2 adults that I have sitting at 75* right now. I'm tempted to moving them into a 65* area for a month or so as I've heard a cool down period has been used by other breeders.

I should also e-mail Stephen.

I really don't have an idea yet....I would ask glenn as well, since he has bred them yearly for awhile and my hatchling came from him.

Do you mean Glenn of Glenn and Nancy?

Can you send me their contact info? Just click on my name above and I'll keep any eye in my spam folders.

The Rhyno came from Steve and he gave me the same advice. The little wiggler still won't eat a pink (I've tried putting both in a deli cup and the snake just eats the fish). The next morning I've got a drowned pink and a snake looking for more fish. I'll keep trying. I got him to take fish off the tongs last week and this week, after 2 hours in a cup with the pink, just figured he wasn't hungry and put the remaining fish in his bowl. Of course, he ate the fish. Hopefully after he sheds, he'll be good and hungry and I'll be able to time it right after fish one and trick him into eating a pink.
Appreciate the advice! How old are your Rhynos? They still look pretty grey in the pics.

I actually was suppose to get them last year but very limited in availability so I had to wait until this year....I fed multiple fish the 2nd or 3rd time so that would more simulate a "big meal"...don't know if it helped...but they took pinks the next.

You've sure got some nice critters. How are the Coxi working out?

mgl Dec 02, 2004 10:49 AM

my male has gone off food for now and could breed now. My female is just a bit smaller so I'm holding her 1 more year...they eat anything, f/t-live-my finger

They are exceptionally beautiful creatures but they were so difficult at first. Glad folks are getting them figured out.
