silkie success!! Rob....you were right!

Well I received my first shipment of silkies. At first my friends and I were horrified by the way they seem to stick together! :P But I took them home feeling a little more comfortable about these squishy little guys. Then there I was watching them wriggle in front of my dragons. They quickly caught on though and LOVED them!!! It was so worth the trouble. (still have to scoop them with a spoon!) My little picky eater even has a fat little belly tonight!

Next question...Where do you guys find them the cheapest with shipping and all? (now lets just see if I can keep them alive until I feed them off!)

How big are your silkies? When I got mine they were small and got to be the size of my pinkie finger before the remaining ones spun cocoons (about 2 months).

They are small to medium. I hope to have them fed off before they get too big, my babies are just 8" and 10 1/2". Do they grow fast?

they do grow fast. You might try growing your own. There is good info onthis if you google silkworms. I guess teachers use this as a class project alot. I got my first batch at www.midwestherpoculture.com. I am trying to grow my own now.I'm in the moth stage and no eggs yet.

I'm glad they are working for you! If you want to keep them smaller for a little longer you might try only feeding them every other day. A cooler temp will also keep them from growing quite as fast. If you buy eggs by the thousand you can even take half and get them growing fast and slow the other half down.... it is much cheaper than buying them already grown and will keep you in food much longer also saving on shipping costs.

Check out www.mulberryfarms.com for all the info you'd need for that.

Hugs,
Robert
