morphs nothing more than a mut?????

freakofnature Dec 01, 2004 07:58 PM

I am curently in the market for a Boa,so Ive been trying to get as much info about them as I can,Internet, local reptile shops,Im sure you all know what Im talking about, just want to make sure I know what Im getting into before buying anything, well while checking different sites out today I ran across boa-constrictors.com,I couldnt believe some of the crap I read on this site. They claim that Morphs are nothing more than muts, that they are atrificial boas with weak genes.
I couldnt believe this they even claim that all the grat color traits that breeders look for when breeding morphs are nothing but genetic faults. Wow and to think I was getting ready to spend some of my hard earned green backs on some genetic fault artifical boa mut,LOL. I guess its just different strokes for different folks. I personally think morphs are beautiful snakes, as are the normals.

but are they mutts ?? well , most are .. but who cares ?? and another thing .. "MUTTS" are usually stronger as far as genetics go .. why ?? cause there is a more diverse amount

what "ARE" weaker are inbred snakes if done improperly and most albinos .(which have to be inbred most of the time anyways to produce the same .

i myself like surinam boas.. but i do admire some of the mix breed boas out there .. whatever you like ,get it !! whose gonna feed it and look at it everyday anyways hope this helps

You may be new to this forum, so let me explain... this is a discussion that is often had here. The author of that website posts here regularly (or has in the past). These discussions tend to become rather passionate, heated, and ugly at times.

Please post carefully if this is going to be discussed again. Your preferences aren't those of everyone else.

Thanks for not making the pregnant lady work too hard,

ban em !!! lol

naaaa i agree everyone has their prefferences and thats why noone should argue over this to begin with

everyone has different taste

the only argueing that should go on is if someone is clearly treating an animal in the wrong way and refuses to fix thee problem .. other than that .. everything else could be talked about and handled like adults

It would be rude to allow those people to walk around ignorant & uneducated. Lucky for them we are here to correct the missinformation.

Morphs, such as albinism, are in fact genetic defaults. I do not believe that this fact makes them any less appealing as far as captive care goes. Many of these morphs are quite beautiful, but to call them mutts is just a confusion of terms. Mutt, to me anyway, means a mixed species. Albino common boas are nothing but a common boa with a genetic default. Now a common boa breed to say, and argentine boa would yield a litter of mutts. Now, if you really want to get CRAZY, there can be mutts with these genetic alterations, such as a salmontine, that are a mixed breed with a genetic default. Perhaps I am a bit picky, but I think it might help to seperate derogitory terms and actual scientific terms when discussing our snakes.

I don't think it can really be fair and call a boa a mutt. That term applies to dogs. It is used a bit loosely in the reptile world.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There are some extremely georgous genetic traits that we are manipulating. But is there anything wrong with that? Boas being compared to dogs is like comparing apples to oranges. We don't have the "westminster" snake show. We don't have to, or need to spay and neuter our snakes. If this was a problem and these snakes were becoming extinct in captivity then maybe we would have a problem. There are plenty of pure lines out there.

If folks complain about "mutts" then why don't they have a problem keeping their snakes in cages?

I am enjoying all the new morphs....keep them coming. Keep the pure lines coming too!!! I don't think it should be an issue.

Happy Holidays!!
