Query: "Circulus"

zeteki Dec 01, 2004 09:57 PM

I have never heard of this term or seen it outside of this forum. Since reading it here I have searched for it elsewhere to no avail. Anyone familiar with the words origins/definition? I am aware of the definition as the word is used here, I'm looking for something more general though (ie, is it always a group of reptiles, vertebrates, breeding groups, etc?).

I, too, wondered about the word when I first read it here with regard to Corucia. As you may already know, it is derived from the Latin for circle. In fact, it's the diminutive form of circus, so it actually means small circle. In anatomy, it is not uncommon, usually referring to a circle formed by connecting arteries, veins, or nerves. Another meaning of it is the concentric circles on each scale of a fish, each of which indicates the annual growth of that scale.
I have not found a single use of the word to refer to a group of Corucia (or any other animals) anywhere outside this forum.
I hope this is helpful.

Circulus, Latin: The full definition of Circulus is

Circle, orbit, ring, social group

For instance Harper Collins Latin Concise Dictionary lists social group as a definition of Circulus.

This term utilized for Reptilian Social Group was used by the Kokrail Reptile Rehabilitation Centre

Also this term was used by the South Florida Corucia Research Center although they have posted on this Forum so you probably have that information already.

Hope this helps.

I have also heard the term Circulus used in social circles. i.e. reptile shows, private talk in reptile wholesale facilities, etc.

Yeh,

And not too many reps have a social order so this term is limited to only a few reptilian species. I have heard Circulus
used in buzz talk too.

A more extensive definition of Circulus as social group can be found in:

A Copious and Critical Latin-English Lexicon by E.A. Andrews, LL.D. New York Harper & Brothers Publishers, 329 & 331 Pearl Street, Franklin Square 1875.

Definition 4 explores the prevailing idea of a social order centered around a neighborhood or vacinity.

Definition 5 defines social order around a given individual, attendents, friends, etc.
