HELP PLEASE.......What Is This

HerpinChic13 Dec 01, 2004 10:31 PM

A friend of mine had this snake in her bedroom last night and i was wondering if anyone could help me out on telling me what kind of snake it was. the animal control told her it was a copperhead but i can't see it being a copperhead it looks to me like a dekayi snake or also known as a northern brown snake so what do u think it could be????

Not a Copperhead; not even close! Someone needs to go find that animal control officer and try to convince him to take up some other line of work, preferably one where he never has to go outside and experience nature in any way, shape or form.

Sheesh! The only thing worse that a total moron is a total moron who somehow gets to be an "expert" on a subject he knows nothing about.

Good call about it being a Northern Brown Snake; you obviously know more than the animal control "expert." I suggest you get the biggest snake book you can find, take it to the home office, meet the genius who called that snake a Copperhead... and beat him senseless with the book.

I agree too...and I'm an animal control officer in Utah...if he wasn't sure of what it was he should have contacted someone that did.... The officers always call me if they aren't sure what kind of snake they are dealing with. I have dealt with wildlife officers in another state that didn't even know what half of the reptiles I had found were!!!!

hey guys i seem to have touched a nerve with some of you so i will explain myself. do i love snakes? yes. do i love animals? yes. am i gonna let a venomous snake stay in my basement because i dont wanna hurt the iddy biddy defensewess snakeywakey? not no, but hell no. have i killed snakes before? yes i have. i am a former U.S. Army infantryman and i tell ya, when a rattlesnake or cottonmouth or other venomous snake is endangering the lives of my fellow soldiers you can be hell[bleep]ing sure that the next sounds anyone would hear would be "click-clack......BANG" and after i did it i would complete my mission and sleep like a baby. but this was always done after trying every otion available and let me tell you when you are on a schedule in the military the only option in a case like that is bad news for the snake. however if was not a priority or other options were available we all gladly let the snake live in peace. so please do not think that i am some horrible monster that goes around killing animals because i dont. however i do like my life as crappy as it is and if it comes down to being either me or the snake, well im sorry but there's gonna be one less snake in the world.

So just how many military operations take place in your basement?

By the way, you seem to be in need of some periods for the ends of your sentences. Here, take some of mine; I have plenty.

I wouldn't worry about it too much; lakebum1716 is obviously one of those people who is easily p*ssed off by ignoramuses. Most of us just consider them insignificant and laugh them off.

Typical, I never met a animal control officer that could tell a brown snake from a copperhead or his arse from a hole in the ground. Its a shame that they are not expected to know much and don't bother to learn on their own. I always imagine a job interview for an animal control person going something like this:
"so, can you whack things on the head?","Yep", "Do mind being complete ignorant over the matters that you are entrusted with?", "nope"," Then your hired!"

Not all ACO's are trained to deal with reptiles, we deal mainly with dogs and cats. I am working on that out here where I live. I am working on a class witha friend that has a reptile rescue service to put together a class for ACO's. I started catching snakes before grade school, read every book on reptiles in the school, and started keeping snakes for pets in 1980.... Some of us do know our reptiles....and are trying to help the others learn.

Thats good to know! I didn't mean to be insulting, but I have had run ins with animal control workers that weren't as consciences as you.
