breeding wieght

skater2337 Dec 01, 2004 11:23 PM

i know all chams will be different but was is usually a good weight to start breeding female veilds? right now im thinking that ill probally do it after her first infertile clutch. or would it be better to breed her before an infertile clutch and have her first clutch be fertile? would this add too much more stress to her? also whats the market like for young veilds right now? im not too intrested in money but i dont want to be stuck with all those babies. thanks.

I have done both. You definately get a better result from waiting. If you breed on the first clutch the female will never get very big. My one female i did this with has had clutch sizes on 15 20 and 20. Rather small for a veiled. One of my other females I ghave waited to breed. She is 11 months old and absoluelty huge in girth. I expect her to lay 50-60 eggs easily. So there is a difference and my personal opinion is waiting is better. I recommend that you wait at least till she is eight or nine months. I know this sounds like a long time but if females lay clutches shen they are young, they never get nearly as big as females who lay several infertile clutches. But then again its all up to you. If you wait her clutches will most likely be 2-3 times as large.
